BPG CORNER: Becoming a BPSO in long-term care

Over the last six years, 52 nursing homes have joined and are actively participating in RNAO’s Long-Term Care Best Practice Spotlight Organization (LTC-BPSO) designation program.* The road to LTC-BPSO designation is a rigourous one. It requires a three-year pre-designation period during which each organization has to meet agreed-upon deliverables. These organizations commit to ensuring evidence-based practice is at the core of everything they do during pre-designation, and that it remains a core focus of their ongoing work as LTC-BPSO designates. To ensure this happens, designated BPSOs are required to renew the BPSO agreements with RNAO every two years.

At any given time, there are a number of LTC organizations at various stages of the designation process. The County of Elgin Homes began its three-year pre-designation period in April 2019. Nipigon District Memorial Hospital is wrapping up its three years, and will achieve formal designation at RNAO’s annual general meeting in June 2020.

We take a closer look at what’s involved in becoming an LTC-BPSO, and the commitment each organization has made to this ongoing work.
