What nursing means to me
Draw up 100 mg of Propofol and 50 mg of Rocuronium. That’s a size 7.5 ETT, secured at 22 cm at the lips with a PEEP of 10 on 100 per cent. We have arterial, peripheral and central lines, all in situ, with vasopressin, epinephrine and levophed all infusing. To some, this jumble of words seems a bit like a salad of clinical jargon. To me, a trauma and emergency department RN, it’s something I have heard frequently since the COVID-19 pandemic began earlier this year. After two hours with this particular patient, I can finally remove my gown, gloves and protective gear. Taking off the N-95 mask – which has left ingrained marks on my nose and cheeks – is a welcome relief. I am drenched in sweat....
