RNAO CEO Dr. Doris Grinspun responds to news that those struggling with homelessness in Barrie are being described as “lawless” in a bid to tear down encampments. (BarrieToday, Sept. 13, 2025)
The mayor’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Barrie will do little to help those living in encampments.
It is dangerous to equate those experiencing homelessness with being lawless even if there has been crime in local encampments, as noted by Susan Eagle, a board member of a local homelessness non-profit.
The lack of humanity is alarming. Blaming people who need help is not the answer and they should not be demonized. Everyone deserves dignity and respect – not to be stereotyped as "dangerous."
What will make a difference is access to affordable housing, providing essential health services and social supports.
Without an adequate system in place, people will continue to fall through the cracks.
Both the local government and provincial government must do their part to ensure residents are able to have a roof over their head and the services they need.
