The Ontario government introduced draft legislation on Feb. 21 which, if passed, allows for some surgeries and other procedures to be performed at investor-driven for-profit clinics. The government previously shared its plan to reduce wait times by using these clinics on Jan. 16. The proposed legislation says there will be “guardrails” to protect patients and the public health system. However, RNAO CEO Dr. Doris Grinspun said that she is concerned for public safety, as these clinics are responsible first to their investors, then to patients. “What will happen is that those who are able to pay the extras will get more care and those who cannot will have more wait times as physicians move from hospitals to the for-profit clinics,” Grinspun explained.
